This chapter starts off by mentioning a "valley of ashes" that lies between West Egg and New York City, and it was where all of the New York ashes went. Above it is a long sign with the bright blue eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg, who was supposed to "watch over the valley," though he had been long deceased. Throughout the chapter, we meet George Wilson who owns a garage by the valley. George's wife, Myrtle, happens to be Tom's lover. Both George and Tom admit to hating their marriages, but they can't get divorced due to religious purposes. Tom takes Myrtle and Nick to an apartment in New York City that he uses for his affair. They attend a small gathering with Myrtle's sister Catherine, and a couple named McKee who appeared to be sloppy and crude. Nick claimed that he'd only been drunk twice in his life, and "the second time was that afternoon." Myrtle continues to get louder and more out of control the more she drinks. Eventually, she begins to chant Daisy's name although Tom tells her to stop. He becomes so angered by this that he reaches over, out of control, and breaks her nose.
I feel like this chapter introduced the immoral actions that are taking place. Although these people appear to have the "perfect" life, they are unhappy with their marriages and are unhappy with life. However, if they don't believe in divorce because of the Catholic religion, then why do they continue to have an affair? Having an affair is also against the Catholic religion. Also, I feel that the sign with Eckleburg's eyes is a foreshadow. Maybe it means more than him "watching over" the ash valley. Maybe it's a symbol that all of the immoral actions being committed by the characters are also being watched, and they just might come out.
