Chapters three and four focus more on Gatsby and revealing what had been previously hiding. Chapter three starts out by talking about one of his big parties. The funny thing was, it was rare to be sent an invitation. People would just show up and socialize. They would marvel over his Rolls Royce and his swimming pools, and look upon him with awe, because of his riches. He socialized with many of the guests, but he never revealed the secret to his riches or talked about his past. Nick was invited to this party and he went, but he never felt completely comfortable or that he fit in all the way. While at the party, Nick meets Jordan Baker who is good friends with Daisy. They both have a fascination with Gatsby and they set out to find him. They go outside and sit at a table with a young man who turned out to be Gatsby. Nick seemed to recognize him, as they had served in the same division during the War. Throughout the party, Gatsby seems to separate him from the other guests, and he doesn't drink. Nick continues to become fascinated with Gatsby. As the night goes on, and Nick becomes more and more acquainted with Jordan. He begins to see her, and to develop a relationship with her.
I don't understand why she feels so drawn to her, because he even states that she's a fairly dishonest person, which is exactly the opposite of himself, or so he wants people to believe. I also don't understand why he's so attracted to Jordan if in the previous chapter, he seems to be gay, as he had sexual relations with McKee. I feel that maybe he's trying to deny the fact that he has feelings for other men, because he is ashamed of it. Because of this, he might be trying to cover it up by date a well known girl .
Chapter four begins to reveal Gatsby's past. Nick goes to lunch with Gatsby in the city, and on the way there, Gatsby begins to talk much about all of his "accomplishments." Nick was skeptical because it seemed as if Gatsby might have been making up some of the things that happened to him, such as collecting jewels in the capitals of Europe. My question is, why is Gatsby opening up so quickly to Nick? No one ever really knew anything about his past; it was all a bunch of rumors. Is there a special connection between Nick and Gatsby that neither of them really realize that is causing Gatsby to have such a large trust in Nick? After the lunch when Nick sees Jordan, she tells him that she met up with Gatsby at the party and Gatsby revealed to her that he was madly in love with Daisy. When he had been a lieutenant officer who was stationed near her, she fell in love with him. However, after the war, Daisy left Gatsby to marry Tom, although she drank herself numb the night before the wedding. There must have been something about Tom that is still unknown which drew Daisy to him and away from Gatsby. Gatsby is still in love with her, and claimed that he bought the house in West Egg just so he could be near her. He asks Nick to invite her to tea, and he would then plan to show up "unexpectedly" so that Daisy would see him, and hopefully it would bring back the memories.
I bet that the reason Gatsby is so quiet and mysterious is because he is still so infatuated and in love with Daisy. He was probably so heartbroken when she left him, that he closed himself off from everyone and refused to show any emotion. I wonder if something happened between Gatsby and Daisy that made her decide to leave. I also wonder if Daisy also has feelings for Gatsby as well. Maybe the reason why she is so unhappy with her marriage is because she can't get over Gatsby, and wants nothing else but to be with him!
