The article How Soccer is Ruining America by Stephen H. Webb is extremely biased and opinionated. First off, he rants about how boring of a sport it is. This is his own opinion, because many people find soccer to be fascinating and exciting. He also tries to sound credible by using ideas such as "the hands and feet God gave you," etc. He also tries to make it seem worse than it is. In the fourth paragraph, he states: "Any sport that limits you to using your feet, with the occasional bang of the head, has something seriously wrong with it." Here again, he is stating his opinion and then trying to alter the text to make the rules of soccer sound negative and unpleasant.
Later on, he uses comparison to try and make soccer look worse. He uses the example of baseball and ethos to say that he used to play baseball. He tries to make a comparison to soccer, but baseball and soccer are two totally different sports and therefore makes it extremely difficult to make an accurate comparison of the two.
Webb also criticizes soccer by using the argument that it's a "foreign invasion," simply because it originated in Europe. He states that it's a European sport because it's all about "death and despair," an that "Americans would never invent a sport where the better you get the less you score."
Lastly, he puts a very sexist remark on this argument. He states that soccer is "a game for girls," because girls "are too smart to waste an entire day playing baseball," and "do not have the bloodlust for football." However these remarks are both biased and untrue. They attack a specific group instead of attacking the argument, therefore making present the logical fallacy of ad hominem.
Overall, Webb's argument is completely full of bias and fallacious arguments, making it extremely inaccurate. He attempts to use ethos in some scenarios to prove himself credible, such as God and baseball but it really does no use for his argument, because it doesn't relate to the actual question of whether or not soccer is really destroying America. He tries to compare soccer to other sports such as baseball, and then attack the female species, saying that soccer is basically the only sport that suits them, which serves as an insult to males. If Webb would have included more factual evidence of proven research, or added witnessed stories, he would have done a much better job at presenting this argument.
